Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue-coloured grape that is first mentioned in the Bordeaux region of France in 1784, it slowly spread across Europe, but was only introduced into the new world in the early 20th Century where it became an overnight favourite in America.

The popularity of Merlot is based on it being one of the most commonly drunk varietal wines, as well as one of the favourites in blends, especially in France and California. Currently it is the worlds third most planted grape variety, with 65% of all vines being grown in France.

Merlot is often harvested "late" to gain ripeness where it produces inky, purple coloured wines that are full-bodied, high alcohol, and with velvety tannins. Intense flavours of plum and blackberry fruit and a lush feel to the palate.
