Ondarre Rivallana Rioja Blanco shows the fresh, easy-drinking side of white Rioja. Viura provides the backbone, joined by Verdejo and Tempranillo Blanco to create an aromatic blend packed with ripe pear, citrus, exotic fruit and delicate wildflower notes. Crisp acidity and a zesty finish make it wonderfully refreshing without feeling overly simple.
There is no oak here; instead, two months on the lees adds a little texture and complexity while keeping the fruit bright and expressive. From our long-standing Rioja producer Bodegas Ondarre, this is an approachable, versatile white that offers a very different experience from traditional oak-aged Rioja Blanco.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Bright and fragrant, with aromas of ripe pear, citrus and exotic fruits accompanied by delicate wildflower notes.
Palate: Light, fresh and fruit-driven, combining juicy pear and citrus with more exotic fruit flavours. Lively acidity gives the wine plenty of energy, while its short period on the lees introduces a subtle roundness and texture without compromising its crisp character.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with ripe fruit giving way to a lively, citrus-led zesty finish.
About
Bodegas Ondarre was founded in 1985 and is based in the historic town of Viana. The winery works closely with growers across its surrounding vineyards and produces a broad range of Rioja, from youthful, fruit-led wines such as Rivallana through to the Reservas for which Ondarre has become particularly well known.
Winemaking: Rivallana Blanco is a blend of 75% Viura, 15% Verdejo and 10% Tempranillo Blanco. After careful selection at the winery, each variety is fermented separately in stainless steel at controlled temperatures between 14 and 16°C. The wines remain on their lees for two months, with periodic racking adding subtle complexity and texture, before the three varieties are carefully blended.
Vineyards: The vineyards lie on south-facing slopes on the northern hills of the Rioja Valley at around 550 metres above sea level. The vines average approximately 25 years old and grow in shallow, nutrient-poor soils, generally only 30 to 35 centimetres deep. Clay, iron and chalk are prevalent, while the challenging terrain encourages deep rooting and contributes to the concentration and freshness of the fruit.
Food Pairing
An excellent aperitif and a versatile match for seafood, grilled white fish, salads and lightly flavoured dishes. Its fresh fruit and acidity also work well with tapas, grilled vegetables and simply prepared chicken.
