Tasting Notes
Dark cherry red in colour with iodine tones, it presents a complex bouquet of fruity, smoky and spice aromas on the nose. On the palate it is solid, long and highly concentrated, demonstrating its great aging potential. It's texture is gloriously smooth and super elegant with great structure.
The great intensity of the fruit allows you to appreciate the typicality of the area.

The 2017 vintage of Bodegas Ondarre's Mayor de Ondarre won a Platinum Medal scoring 97pts at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards, with the description "Rolling, elegant and complex with a resplendent coconut, blackberry, plum and vanilla oak bouquet. Polished oak on the palate with some leafy dark berries, strawberry and black raspberry elements. Mouth-filling, refined tannins rev up, with touches of coffee and chocolate mocha on the lingering finish."
The wine is made from 92% Tempranillo, the rest being predominantly Mazuelo with other varieties from low-yield vineyards.
The wine is a limited edition of around 7,000 bottles. It is bottled without clarification or stabilization so it may present precipitates. In that case, decanting is recommended.
Vineyards: The vineyards are situated on Rioja Valley’s northern hills on south-facing slopes, at an altitude of 550 metres above sea level. The vines, which have an average age of 25 years. The soils vary from plot to plot, but there is a prevalence of clay based soils with high iron and chalk content.
Winemaking: Traditional winemaking. Vatted for three weeks and fermented between 20ºC and 26ºC, with daily pumping over and delestages .
Malolactic degradation carried out in new oak barrels from Missouri and central France, and subsequent aging on lees, until racking.
It spends 16 months in barrels (80% French and 20% American). In order to preserve maximum concentration, the wine clarified spontaneously, carrying out successive rackings. After bottling, it remains in bottle rack for at least 20 months.
