Cantine di Ora Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore is a generous, beautifully rounded Italian red, combining ripe cherry, dark plum and wild berry flavours with warming spice and a hint of dried fruit. Smooth tannins and balancing freshness make it rich and satisfying without becoming excessively heavy.
Produced using the traditional Ripasso technique, the wine undergoes a second fermentation on grape skins previously used for Amarone, developing greater depth, body and complexity before maturation in oak.
An excellent choice for customers who enjoy full-flavoured Italian reds and want something richer than everyday Valpolicella, but more approachable and versatile than a powerful Amarone.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Inviting aromas of ripe cherry, morello cherry and dark plum, accompanied by wild berries, dried fruit and gentle notes of cinnamon, vanilla and savoury spice.
Palate: Rich and rounded, with generous cherry, plum and dark berry flavours complemented by hints of dried fruit, liquorice and warming spice. The traditional Ripasso process brings additional concentration and texture, while well-integrated tannins and balancing acidity maintain an appealing freshness. Smooth and harmonious, with more depth than a straightforward Valpolicella.
Finish: Long, warming and pleasantly savoury, with lingering cherry, dried plum and gentle spice, supported by rounded tannins and a dry, balanced conclusion.
About
Cantine di Ora Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore is a richly flavoured Italian red from the hills of Valpolicella in Veneto, northern Italy. Made using one of the region's most distinctive traditional winemaking techniques, it offers an appealing combination of ripe fruit, smooth texture and savoury complexity.
Valpolicella is celebrated for producing several different styles of red wine from its traditional local grape varieties. While everyday Valpolicella emphasises freshness and bright cherry fruit, Amarone is produced from partially dried grapes to create a much richer, more concentrated wine. Ripasso occupies an attractive position between these styles, offering additional body and complexity while retaining the character and versatility of Valpolicella.
The wine is produced from a blend of traditional regional varieties, including Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. Corvina contributes characteristic cherry fruit and freshness, while the other varieties provide additional colour, body and aromatic complexity.
What makes this wine particularly appealing is its balance between richness and drinkability. The Ripasso method adds layers of ripe fruit, dried plum and warming spice, but the wine retains sufficient freshness to remain enjoyable throughout a meal rather than feeling overly heavy.
It is an excellent choice for customers who enjoy generous Italian reds, particularly those looking to explore the character of Amarone without moving to its greater concentration or typically higher price. Equally, it offers a satisfying step up from a lighter, everyday Valpolicella.
Winemaking: The grapes undergo an initial fermentation to produce a traditional Valpolicella red wine. This is followed by the Ripasso process, in which the wine is brought into contact with the grape skins remaining from Amarone production, encouraging a second fermentation. This adds colour, flavour, body and tannin structure, giving the finished wine greater depth and complexity. Subsequent maturation in oak barrels helps develop its rounded texture and harmonious character.
Vineyards: The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the hills of Valpolicella, within Italy's Veneto region. The area's varied hillside exposures, soils and growing conditions provide a favourable environment for the traditional local red grape varieties. Ripe fruit development, balanced acidity and the distinctive cherry character of these grapes form the foundation of the wine before the additional richness introduced by the Ripasso process.
Food Pairing
An excellent partner for roast beef, slow-cooked lamb, grilled meats and hearty Italian casseroles. Its ripe fruit and gentle spice also complement lasagne, rich tomato-based pasta dishes, mushroom risotto and mature cheeses. Particularly enjoyable with comforting autumn and winter meals, where its generous flavour and smooth texture come into their own.
