Brunilde di Menzione Salice Salentino Riserva DOC showcases Brunilde's elegant interpretation of one of Puglia's classic red wine styles. Built around the traditional Negroamaro grape, it combines ripe dark fruit with savoury complexity, gentle spice and a smooth, structured finish.
Compared with the richer, fruit-driven style of Primitivo, Salice Salentino often offers greater savoury character, firmer structure and a little more elegance while still retaining the warmth and generosity that make southern Italian wines so enjoyable.
It's an excellent choice for anyone looking to explore beyond Primitivo while remaining firmly within the characterful red wines of Puglia.
Merchant's Tip
If you already enjoy Primitivo but would like to explore another classic side of Puglia, this is a very easy bottle to recommend. It retains the warmth and ripe fruit you may already enjoy, but brings more savoury character, structure and gentle oak complexity to the table.
Nose: Ripe blackberry and wild berries are joined by gentle spice, vanilla and subtle dark-chocolate notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, smooth and enveloping, with ripe dark fruit balanced by savoury character, polished tannins and gentle oak-derived notes of vanilla, cocoa and spice.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering blackberry, dark chocolate, spice and a gently savoury character.
Brunilde di Menzione Salice Salentino Riserva is built around Negroamaro, the traditional red grape at the heart of Salice Salentino. It gives the wine its combination of ripe dark fruit, savoury character and structure, creating a distinctly different expression of Puglia from the softer, more fruit-driven style associated with Primitivo.
After fermentation, the wine spends several months in stainless steel before completing a total refinement period of 24 months, including six months in wood. It is then bottled and given further time to mature before release.
That extended maturation helps integrate the fruit, tannins and oak influence, adding vanilla, dark chocolate and spice to the ripe blackberry character while retaining the balance and savoury personality that make Salice Salentino such a useful food wine.
This is particularly good with roast lamb, grilled beef, slow-cooked meat dishes, sausage and mushroom pasta, game and mature cheeses. Its combination of ripe fruit, savoury character and smooth tannins makes it particularly comfortable alongside richer food.
Serve at around 18–20°C. Opening the bottle around 20–30 minutes before serving will give the fruit, spice and oak-derived notes time to become more expressive.

This is the bottle we'd recommend when someone enjoys the generosity of Puglian reds but wants something a little more savoury, structured and food-focused than Primitivo.
What makes it interesting isn't simply greater intensity. The extended maturation brings the ripe fruit, savoury Negroamaro character and gentle oak together into a smoother, more composed wine.
If you prefer very soft, sweetly fruited reds, Primitivo may suit you better. But if you want to explore another classic side of Puglia without moving into anything austere, Salice Salentino Riserva is a very convincing next step.
