Brunilde di Menzione Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC is a premium expression of one of southern Italy's most celebrated red wine styles. Produced from carefully selected Primitivo grapes grown around Manduria, it combines generous ripe fruit with impressive depth and refinement.
Compared with a straightforward everyday Primitivo, this Riserva offers greater concentration, structure and complexity while retaining the smooth, approachable character that makes Primitivo so popular.
It's an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys rich, warming Italian reds with plenty of fruit, polished tannins and a long, satisfying finish.
Merchant's Tip
If you've already discovered that you enjoy Primitivo and want to trade up without losing the grape's ripe fruit and smooth texture, this is exactly the sort of bottle we'd recommend. It brings noticeably more depth, structure and complexity while remaining generous and approachable.
Nose: Ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum combine with warming spice and the deeper, more developed aromas that come from extended maturation in oak.
Palate: Full-bodied, smooth and structured, with concentrated ripe dark fruit supported by warming spice and polished tannins. The extended barrique ageing adds depth and complexity without losing the generous fruit at the heart of the wine.
Finish: Long, smooth and persistent, with lingering ripe fruit, spice and savoury complexity.
Choose this wine if you already enjoy Primitivo but want greater concentration, structure and complexity than you would normally expect from an everyday bottle.
It is particularly well suited to drinkers who enjoy rich Malbec, Amarone, full-bodied Shiraz or other generous, warming reds and want to explore Primitivo at a more serious level.
If you prefer lighter, fresher reds or simply want an easy everyday Primitivo, another bottle in the collection is likely to suit you better.
Brunilde di Menzione Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC is made entirely from Primitivo grown using the traditional Alberello bush-vine system. The grapes are harvested by hand towards the end of August once they have reached optimum ripeness.
After harvest, the wine ferments for around 25 days at a controlled temperature of 33°C, a relatively warm and extended fermentation designed to develop its structure and aromas. It is then matured in oak barriques for at least 12 months.
That extended oak maturation is central to the Riserva's character. It builds on Primitivo's naturally generous ripe fruit, giving the wine greater structure, smoother integration and additional spicy complexity while retaining the richness that makes the grape so approachable.
This is a natural partner for grilled steak, roast lamb, slow-cooked or stewed beef, rich tomato-based pasta and mature hard cheeses. Its ripe fruit, structure and smooth tannins make it particularly comfortable alongside hearty, strongly flavoured dishes.
Serve at around 16–18°C. Opening the bottle around 20–30 minutes before serving will help its ripe fruit, spice and more developed aromas become expressive.

This is the bottle we'd point to when someone already enjoys Primitivo and wants to see what the grape can offer at a more serious level.
The extra spend isn't simply buying a bigger or sweeter wine. You're getting the greater concentration of Primitivo di Manduria together with at least 12 months of barrique maturation, giving the wine more structure, depth and complexity while retaining the ripe fruit and smooth texture that make Primitivo so appealing.
If you want a light, fresh Italian red, this isn't the right direction. But if you enjoy rich, warming reds and want to trade up within Primitivo, Brunilde's Riserva makes a convincing case.
