San Marzano Tramari Primitivo Rosé shows a wonderfully fresh and elegant side of a grape better known for producing rich southern Italian reds. Delicate cherry and raspberry fruit combine with floral and Mediterranean herbal notes, while a lightly saline edge gives the wine a crisp, refreshing finish.
Made entirely from Primitivo with only a few hours of skin contact, Tramari is fermented like a white wine and aged in stainless steel to preserve its freshness. Refreshing enough to enjoy on its own but with enough character for the table, it is an excellent choice when you want a lively Italian rosé with more personality and food versatility than a simple summer refresher.
Merchant's Tip
Primitivo and Zinfandel are genetically the same grape, but don't mistake Tramari for an Italian version of White Zinfandel. This is a very different style: fresh, dry and Mediterranean in character, with cherry, raspberry and a lightly saline finish rather than the sweeter, fruitier character you may associate with Californian White Zinfandel. It is equally different from the rich, powerful red Primitivo you may already know.
Appearance: Delicate pale pink.
Nose: Fresh cherry and raspberry aromas accompanied by floral notes and distinctive Mediterranean herbs.
Palate: Fresh, elegant and balanced, with delicate red fruit and a lightly savoury, saline quality that keeps the wine lively and refreshing.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with red fruit, Mediterranean herbs and a lightly saline note lingering on the finish.
Choose Tramari if you want a fresh, dry Italian rosé but would like something with a little more personality than a simple summer refresher. Its cherry and raspberry fruit is delicate rather than sweet, while Mediterranean herbs and a lightly saline character give it plenty of interest at the table.
It's particularly worth trying if you already know Primitivo as a rich red wine. Tramari shows a completely different side of the grape, using very short skin contact and stainless-steel ageing to produce something pale, fresh and elegant.
If you prefer sweeter, overtly fruity rosé, this probably isn't the bottle for you. Tramari is firmly about freshness, dry red-fruit character and savoury Mediterranean complexity.
Tramari is made entirely from Primitivo grown around San Marzano in Salento, at approximately 100 metres above sea level. The vines grow in thin, rocky clay soils in Puglia's warm, relatively dry southern climate.
The grapes are harvested in the first week of September and spend only a few hours in contact with their skins before part of the juice is drawn off and fermented. That limited skin contact gives Tramari its delicate pale-pink colour and fresh red-fruit character without extracting the deeper colour and structure associated with red Primitivo.
Ageing takes place entirely in stainless steel rather than oak, preserving the wine's cherry and raspberry fruit, Mediterranean herbal aromas and fresh, elegant character.
The name Tramari recalls tra i mari — “between the seas” — a reference to its Salento origins between the Adriatic and Ionian seas.

Tramari is particularly versatile at the table. Try it with Italian antipasti, prawns and shellfish, fish soups, roasted or baked fish and fresh or lightly matured cheeses. Its freshness and delicate red-fruit character make it particularly useful when you want something with more fruit than a crisp white without moving all the way to red wine.
Serve chilled at around 10–12°C. For more ideas, see our guide to pairing food with Puglia wines.
Tramari succeeds because it doesn't simply taste like a lighter version of red Primitivo. The short skin contact and stainless-steel ageing give the grape a completely different role: delicate red fruit, freshness and Mediterranean savouriness rather than richness and power.
If you want a dry Italian rosé with enough character for food but still refreshing enough to drink on its own, it's a very easy bottle to recommend.
