If you're looking for a Primitivo that offers more than simple richness, Produttori di Manduria Elegia Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOC is well worth considering. Ripe blackberry, raspberry and plum are joined by vanilla, toasted spice and distinctive balsamic notes, creating a full-bodied red with polished tannins and a long, composed finish.
Produced from mature vines in the heart of Manduria and matured for 12 months in French oak, Elegia has the concentration expected from premium Primitivo but remains fresh and beautifully balanced. It is an excellent choice for customers who enjoy generous reds but still want structure, refinement and detail.
Merchant's Tip
Customers sometimes assume that spending more on Primitivo simply buys a bigger wine. Elegia shows what premium Primitivo can really offer: greater balance, detail and refinement. It has all the richness you would expect from Manduria, but its freshness and balsamic character are what make it memorable.
Nose: Ripe blackberry, raspberry and plum are joined by vanilla, sweet spice, toasted almond and distinctive balsamic and savoury notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, warm and structured, combining concentrated dark fruit with polished tannins and bright acidity. Integrated French oak contributes vanilla and toast, while the wine's balsamic character brings balance and definition.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice, polished oak and savoury complexity.
Choose Elegia if you enjoy full-bodied reds with ripe dark fruit, substantial structure and noticeable but well-integrated oak.
It should particularly appeal if you enjoy premium Primitivo, Argentine Malbec, Australian Shiraz or other generous reds but want more freshness, detail and finesse than simple richness alone can provide.
If you prefer light-bodied wines, minimal oak, delicate red fruit or lower alcohol, another style may suit you better. Elegia is a substantial 15% red, although its balance keeps that power remarkably well controlled.
Elegia Primitivo di Manduria Riserva is made entirely from Primitivo grown on mature 35–50-year-old vines, trained using both traditional alberello bush vines and espalier. Yields average around 60 quintals per hectare, with the grapes harvested during the second half of September.
After temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine remains in contact with its skins for around two weeks before spending 12 months in French Allier oak barriques. All of the wine undergoes oak ageing, with around 30% of the barrels being new.
This gives Elegia its combination of concentrated blackberry, raspberry and plum with vanilla, toast and spice, while its bright acidity and distinctive balsamic character prevent the wine from becoming simply heavy or fruit-driven.
Elegia works particularly well with rib-eye steak, slow-cooked lamb, roast or braised beef, venison, game, rich ragù and mature hard cheeses.
Serve at around 16–18°C. If the bottle has been stored in a warm room, place it in the fridge for approximately 20 minutes before opening. Decanting for around 30 minutes will help the dark fruit, spice and balsamic notes become more expressive.

Elegia is a Primitivo for customers who want more than ripeness and weight. Its mature-vine concentration, 12 months in French oak and balsamic freshness give it considerably more detail and structure than a straightforward fruit-led example.
It remains a powerful wine and will not suit someone looking for delicacy or minimal oak. But for drinkers who already enjoy Primitivo and want to discover what a more serious Primitivo di Manduria Riserva can offer, Elegia makes a compelling step up.
