Domaine La Barroche Signature Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016 is a serious bottle from an outstanding vintage, now with a decade of maturity behind it. Old-vine Grenache leads a beautifully layered wine of cherry, raspberry and darker berries, threaded with dried Provençal herbs, pepper, liquorice and spice. Rich and concentrated yet remarkably fresh, its fine, silky tannins give it elegance rather than sheer weight.

Signature is the cuvée Julien Barrot believes best captures the character of his family estate. Made from numerous parcels and vines averaging around 70 years old, the acclaimed 2016 combines genuine Châteauneuf pedigree with the added complexity that careful bottle ageing can bring.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Complex and expressive, with ripe cherry, raspberry and blackberry joined by dried Provençal herbs, potpourri, pepper and warm spice. Bottle maturity brings additional savoury complexity while the fruit remains beautifully defined.

Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated but impressively fresh and poised. Ripe red and black fruits are layered with liquorice, dried herbs and spice, supported by abundant yet very fine tannins. There is considerable depth here, but also a silky texture and sense of energy that prevents the wine from ever feeling cumbersome.

Finish: Exceptionally long and harmonious, with lingering red fruit, herbs, spice and savoury complexity carried by fine, mature tannins.

About

Domaine La Barroche is a small family-owned estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with the Barrot family's winemaking history stretching back through generations. Today Julien Barrot leads the domaine, working with fewer than 15 hectares spread principally across the northern and north-eastern parts of the appellation. Old Grenache vines, diverse soils and a philosophy centred firmly on expressing terroir have established La Barroche among the highly regarded modern producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Winemaking: The 2016 is approximately 62% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah, 6% Cinsault and 2% other traditional varieties. Vinification takes place in concrete, followed by around 18 months of maturation. Grenache is aged in large foudres, Syrah and Mourvèdre in older demi-muids, while Cinsault is matured in stainless steel. This restrained approach develops complexity and texture without allowing new oak to dominate the character of the fruit.

Vineyards: Signature brings together fruit from a number of Domaine La Barroche's Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels, with vines averaging around 70 years of age. The estate encompasses a diverse collection of terroirs, including predominantly sandy soils alongside the large rounded stones associated with the appellation. Old Grenache is particularly important, providing the concentration, finesse and depth at the heart of the wine.

Food Pairing

A wine of this maturity deserves equally flavoursome but relatively simple food. Excellent with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, venison, duck or other game, particularly with rosemary, thyme or Provençal herbs. It would also be superb with mature hard cheeses. Decant carefully to separate any sediment, but avoid excessively long aeration before serving.
