  • This is an astonishing Chateauneuf du Pape. Surely only a matter of time before we are paying double for a wine of this finesse.
  • Akin to top names like Vieux Telegraphe and Beaucastel, but without a hefty price tag.
  • Made from 60-100 year old vines from some of the best plots in Chateauneuf.
  • The ‘Signature’ wine, plummy on the palate but not heavy with a nice gentle grip giving breadth and complexity.
  • From an extraordinary vintage rated 98 points by wine critic, Robert Parker.

Brief Description

Tasting Notes

One of the best Chateauneuf du Pape wines we have tasted. Opulent and full-bodied with refined dark fruits flavours (bramble and plum) on a complex backbone of spice, pepper and fine, dry tannins, with a hint of cedar wood. Full on the palate but not heavy, a nice gentle grip giving the wine momentum and breadth to finish on a smooth, soft palate.

About

Julien Barrot, of Domaine la Barroche, is one of the young, emerging talents of the southern Rhone. After Julien completed his winemaking course in Montpellier he backpacked around the vineyards of France and Australia, thirsty for knowledge and eager to expand his experiences. He came back and joined his father in 2002, more convinced than ever of the importance of terroir. Julien's enthusiasm and passion rubbed off on his father and together they agreed to release the first Domaine-bottled wines in the 2003 vintage.

The estate is small, encompassing 12 ha, and is planted to the traditional varieties including Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. The average age of the vines is 60 years old and one third of the vineyard is more than 100 years old (Grenache.) Their holdings are in some of Chateauneuf's most hallowed ground. Grapes are hand picked, wines are fermented then aged in a mixture of large old wooden foudres and smaller oak barrels. This has rapidly become a top domaine.

Ideal with...

This phenomenal wine could easily grace the tables of any fine dining establishment and excels alongside rich game dishes and red meats. With a rib-eye, it sings and with the cheese board, you’ll be very glad you had that extra bottle to hand.
