Ondarre Rioja Crianza Rivallana is a smooth, fruit-led Rioja combining ripe cherry, raspberry and plum with gentle vanilla, spice and savoury character from oak maturation. Soft tannins and refreshing acidity keep everything balanced and wonderfully easy to enjoy, while enough maturity gives it the familiar character you expect from good Rioja Crianza.
Made by Bodegas Ondarre, Rivallana is an excellent everyday Rioja: dependable, versatile and full of character without becoming heavy or demanding. Choose it when you want more oak and development than a youthful Rioja, but still want the fruit, freshness and relaxed drinkability to remain at the heart of the wine.
Merchant's Tip
Rivallana is one of those wines where “everyday Rioja” should be taken as a compliment. It isn't trying to imitate a more mature Reserva. Instead, it gives you ripe fruit, gentle oak and recognisable Rioja character in a softer, fresher and more immediately approachable style. If you want a dependable bottle for dinner rather than something that needs a special occasion, this is exactly where we'd start.
Appearance: Bright ruby red with youthful violet tones.
Nose: Ripe cherry, raspberry and red plum are joined by vanilla, sweet spice and a touch of cocoa, with gentle savoury notes underneath giving the wine its familiar Rioja character.
Palate: Medium-bodied, smooth and beautifully balanced. Juicy red berry and plum fruit lead into mellow oak, vanilla and soft spice, with supple tannins and refreshing acidity keeping the wine lively and easy to drink.
Finish: Clean and smooth, with lingering red fruit, gentle spice and a subtle savoury edge.
Choose Rivallana if you want recognisable Rioja character without the fuller maturity of Reserva. It gives you the ripe fruit and easy drinkability of a relatively youthful red, but with enough oak maturation to introduce the vanilla, spice and savoury complexity that many of us associate with traditional Rioja.
It's particularly useful when the occasion doesn't call for anything too serious. Midweek dinners, Sunday roasts, tapas, pizza, barbecues or simply opening a bottle because you fancy Rioja all suit Rivallana perfectly. Smooth tannins and fresh acidity also make it forgiving enough to enjoy without food.
If you want something even younger and more fruit-driven, Ondarre Primeur takes another step towards freshness and immediacy. If you're looking instead for greater maturity, savoury complexity and developed oak character, Ondarre Rioja Reserva is the natural next step.
Rivallana's easy balance comes partly from its blend. Tempranillo provides the core of ripe red fruit and structure, while smaller amounts of Garnacha add generosity and Mazuelo contributes freshness and a gently savoury character. The result is recognisably Rioja without becoming either too powerful or too austere.
The fruit comes from vineyards around Viana, where altitude and cooler conditions help preserve freshness while favourable slopes allow the grapes to ripen fully. That combination gives Ondarre fruit with enough flavour and concentration for oak maturation while retaining the acidity that keeps the finished wine lively.
Maturation in American and French oak then adds another layer rather than changing the wine's identity. Vanilla, sweet spice and subtle savoury flavours sit around the ripe fruit, while the tannins become softer and more rounded. That's why Rivallana occupies such a useful middle ground: it has enough maturation to taste unmistakably like Crianza, but the fruit remains fresh enough for the wine to feel relaxed and immediately approachable.
Rivallana's ripe fruit, soft tannins and gentle savoury character make it extremely versatile with food. Try it with roast pork or chicken, grilled lamb, burgers, sausages, tomato-based pasta and pizza, or serve it alongside tapas, chorizo and chargrilled vegetables.
It's equally comfortable with Manchego or mature Cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C; there's no real need to decant, although a few minutes in the glass will allow the fruit, vanilla and spice to become more expressive.

Rivallana earns its place because sometimes you don't need Rioja to be profound — you just want it to be really enjoyable. It gives you enough oak and maturity to deliver familiar Crianza character, but keeps the fruit fresh, the tannins soft and the whole wine easy to drink.
Within the Ondarre range that gives it a very clear job. Primeur is younger and more immediate; Reserva is more mature and savoury. Rivallana sits naturally between them, offering a little of both worlds without pretending to be either.
For a relaxed meal, casual gathering or first exploration of Rioja Crianza, it's exactly the sort of dependable, good-value bottle we're happy to recommend again and again.
