As well as being a medieval town in Siena in the south of Tuscany, Montepuliano is the one of the most widely grown grape indigenous varieties in this region, along with Sangiovese. Here the hot climate is perfect for the fruit, which tends to ripen quite late in the season. With a fair amount of phenols and tannins, it shares some of the antioxidant properties of Bordeaux wines and can have good ageing potential as well as being excellent with food.
