Tasting Notes
Aromas of fresh white flowers lead to a lovely fresh juice showing melons, white peaches and a touch of mango. There's a lovely, expressive minerality too with hints of herbs and fennel.
About
Ederra Verdejo is made by the oldest winery in Rioja, Bodegas Bilbainas, which is owned by the Cordorniu Raventos group/family. Originating from North Africa, Verdejo has been written about since the 11th century, though it is only since the 1970's that it has been used to make young, fresh wines. Prior to that, it was used in fortified, sherry-like wines.
It's all about keeing the juice in the best possible condition when making this expressive wine. To best achieve this, the fruit is harvested at night when it is cooler and the grapes are firmer and less likely to bruise during harvest. The wine is then vinified in stainless steel tanks before bottling.
Ideal with...
We like this wine on its own with a few snacks. With food, try it with rice dishes such as fish paella or kedgeree. Cold meats and carpaccio along with mildly spiced dishes and seafood are also a good match.
