San Marzano Il Pumo Sauvignon Blanc Malvasia is a bright, approachable Puglian white for anyone who enjoys Sauvignon Blanc but prefers a softer, less herbaceous style. Citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit are joined by delicate floral aromas, while lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and refreshing.
Blending Sauvignon Blanc with Malvasia Bianca gives this wine a distinctive alternative to a straightforward Sauvignon Blanc, combining freshness and fruit with a more rounded, fragrant character. Made entirely in stainless steel, it's an easy-drinking white that works equally well as an aperitif, with lighter food or simply as a reliable bottle to keep chilled.
Merchant's Tip
If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc but sometimes find more intensely herbaceous examples a little too grassy or piercing, this is well worth trying. It retains plenty of freshness and citrus fruit, but the Malvasia Bianca blend gives it a distinctive, more Mediterranean character.
Appearance: Straw yellow with fresh green reflections.
Nose: Fresh citrus and tropical fruit accompanied by delicate floral aromas reminiscent of broom.
Palate: Lively and refreshing, with citrus and exotic fruit, good acidity and a fresh mineral character. The blend feels bright and crisp without becoming overly sharp.
Finish: Clean, fresh and mineral, with lingering citrus, tropical fruit and delicate floral notes.
Choose Il Pumo if you enjoy fresh, fruit-led white wines with citrus and tropical fruit, but would like something a little different from a straightforward Sauvignon Blanc.
It's particularly well suited to Sauvignon Blanc drinkers who prefer freshness without an intensely grassy or herbaceous character, or anyone who enjoys crisp Italian whites but would like a little more fragrance and personality.
If you prefer rich, buttery Chardonnay, noticeable oak, sweetness or particularly weighty white wines, another style will probably suit you better. Il Pumo is deliberately about freshness, fruit and easy drinking.
Il Pumo Malvasia Sauvignon Salento IGP blends Malvasia Bianca with Sauvignon Blanc, bringing together a native Puglian grape and an international variety in a fresh, aromatic white.
The grapes are grown around San Marzano in Salento, approximately 100 metres above sea level, where significant differences between daytime and night-time temperatures help the grapes retain freshness as they ripen. Harvest takes place during the second and third weeks of August.
After destemming and gentle pressing, the juice undergoes cold settling before alcoholic fermentation at around 16°C in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured entirely in stainless steel rather than oak.
That straightforward winemaking keeps the emphasis on fresh citrus and tropical fruit, delicate floral aromas, lively acidity and minerality rather than introducing oak-derived flavours or additional weight.
Il Pumo works particularly well with starters, fish soups, seafood, soft young cheeses and pasta or other first courses with light fish sauces. It also makes a refreshing aperitif.
Serve at around 10–12°C. That keeps the wine refreshing while allowing its citrus, tropical fruit and floral aromas to remain expressive.

This is one of the easiest San Marzano whites to recommend because it offers freshness without aggression and plenty of flavour without unnecessary weight.
Its Sauvignon Blanc character gives it an immediately recognisable point of reference, while the Malvasia Bianca blend and Puglian origin make it sufficiently different to be interesting. Stainless-steel fermentation and maturation keep everything bright, clean and uncomplicated.
If you're looking for a reliable everyday white that's a little less predictable than another straight Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, Il Pumo Sauvignon Blanc Malvasia offers excellent value.
