Mazuelo is a red grape variety that is thought to have originated in either Spain or Sardinia around the 9th centaury. It is also known by the name Carignan in France and elsewhere around the globe.
It is one of the most popularly grown and cultivated red grape varieties in the world, especially France.
In Spain, under the name of Mazuelo it is grown in the Rioja regions where it makes up about 3% of total grape plantings, where it is grown mostly for its productiveness.
Mazuelo wines have a dark, captivating red colour, are very aromatic, with fantastic fruity flavours. Its acidic nature and naturally strong alcoholic content make it a favourite to be blended in wines with other grape verities.
