AOC Pauillac, Cru Bourgeois. A 1971 vintage wine in outstanding condition.

Brief Description

With levels into the neck and good, clean (slightly cellar-aged) labels, this is the best examples of a 1971 wine we have found.

Considered by some to be a fairly average vintage, 1971 was actually given 4 out of 5 stars by wine critic, Michael Broadbent. Good quality, though pricey wines were a theme as the Bordelais considered the vintage to be better than the critics. The star of the vintage was Chateau Latour which scored an impressive 94 points whilst Chateau Mouton Rothschild achieved 88 points. Chateau Plantey is located between these great Chateaux and less than 3 kilometres from Mouton Rothschild.

Purchased by the Meffre family in 1958, the estate is today run by Claude Meffre who also manages Chateau La Commanderie in Saint Estephe. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the wine is aged in oak barrels, 25% of which are renewed each year. In their youth, the wines are dense, ruby-red with rich black fruits and vanilla and firm tannins.

Our Views

The vintage, the appellation, the winery's location and the condition of this wine are all really good indicators that this wine will still be very presentable.
