The Zinfandel grape is one of the greatest gifts that the Italians brought to the USA. In Italy the grape is known as Primitivo, a grape used to make fantastic heavy, full bodied, fruit led red wines.
It was around 1960 when it was first realised that the grapes where similar, but only at the start of the 1990's was it scientifically proven that they are genetically identical.
However, despite their genetic match, the decades they have been separated, the different climate, and the different soil and growing methods has resulted in two quite distinctive wine styles.
Zinfandel is mostly grown in California, and is best known for making pink wine, known as 'White Zinfandel' a fruity, gently sweet wine, ideal to drink chilled in the hot Californian sun, and with the Californian summers, its no wonder it became such a smash.
From there, it has become possibly the most popular rose wines for summer parties, and with its gently sweet palate is a great crowd pleaser for those looking for an easy drink.
Canyon Road has produced an ever so slightly lower ABV for their white zinfandel, further increasing its popularity for long afternoons and evening in the sun.
