Considered by some to be a fairly average vintage, 1971 was actually given 4 out of 5 stars by wine critic, Michael Broadbent. Good quality, though pricey wines were a theme as the Bordelais considered the vintage to be better than the critics. The star of the vintage was Chateau Latour which scored an impressive 94 points whilst Chateau Mouton Rothschild achieved 88 points. Chateau Plantey is located between these great Chateaux and less than 3 kilometres from Mouton Rothschild.

Purchased by the Meffre family in 1958, the estate is today run by Claude Meffre who also manages Chateau La Commanderie in Saint Estephe. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the wine is aged in oak barrels, 25% of which are renewed each year. In their youth, the wines are dense, ruby-red with rich black fruits and vanilla and firm tannins.
