Tasting Notes
Phenomenal dark fruits covering a huge range including blueberry, blackberry and cassis with smoked meat and liquorice in the background. Full-bodied and serious with big, yet fine tannins and a finish that goes on and on. Very drinkable young as it is open knit and not too closed, though it does benefit from a couple of hours in a decanter or double decant (pour into a jug and then back into the bottle).
About
Chateauneuf du Pape is a unique 'terroir' made up predominantly of huge pebbly soil. In fact, it's hard to see any soil at all in some fields and vineyards because of the predominance of pebbles and stone of all sizes. It's amazing to think that the forces of nature millions of years ago would leave an area so defined and perhaps equally surprising that anyone tried to grow anything, let alone vines, in it. Yet this pebble rich soil holds the secret to growing some of the best grapes in the world. During the long hot summer days of this Mediterranean climate, these huge pebbles heat up and then release their heat back into the soil overnight until the next day when the whole process starts again. This consistency of soil temperature goes a long way to producing the best wine grapes possible.
Domaine de la Solitude is situated in the heart of Chateauneuf du Pape and enjoys some of the best vineyards in the world, known locally as La Crau. Couple this with decades of wine-making experience within the Lancon family and it is easy to understand why their wines stand out on the world stage as exceptional.
Ideal with...
We hesitate to recommend a wine for cooler seasons and, whilst this wine in unquestionably excellent any time, it is superb with hearty red meats dishes and casseroles. It is a good match for game (venison) and other rich, dishes including stuffed tomatoes, tartiflette and cheese fondu.
