Tasting Notes
A fine mousse indicates immediately that this is a well-made, classy sparkling wine. With dark chocolate and Morello Cherries on the nose and rich tropical fruits on the palate, it leaves you with a long sweet red fruit finish. Whilst it is refreshing and fun, its finesse and depth shows that this is a serious fine wine that could be wheeled out for any occasion.
About
Initially developed by Lehmann's as something of a hobby wine, it was only when the 1994 vintage was first released commercially in 1999 that the Black Queen was truly born. Named after the Queen of Sheba, it quickly became recognised as the benchmark which others would strive to copy - not easy for a wine which can be up to 5 years old before it is released from the winery for us to enjoy.
Made with 100% shiraz from older, low yielding vines, the Black Queen is fermented then aged for 12 months in older French oak barrels before a secondary fermentation where it is aged in the bottle in the same way as champagne (on its lees) for two years.
Ideal with...
Remarkably versatile, this serious sparkling Shiraz can be enjoyed with or without food. With savouries, try it with honey roast ham or turkey though it is equally at home with chocolate cake or cherry pie. Our favourite - on its own with a bar of dark chocolate (70% cocoa).
