Tasting Notes
One of the two main grape varieties for Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon works exceptionally well with food, though we sometimes enjoy the Mentor on its own on a cold day in front of the fire. Deep rich burgundy-red colour, this is a firmly structured wine with concentrated black fruits (especially cassis) and fine, silky tannins. Full-bodied, hedonistic - a wine that evokes passion and sheer indulgence.
About
The Mentor was created as a tribute to the great man himself. As a winery, Peter Lehmann are known for their superb range of Shiraz (Syrah) wines, so the idea behind this Cabernet was to create something on a par with the legendary Stonewell Shiraz. As a single variety Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine would outperform many Bordeaux wines and would certainly cost considerably more if it were sporting a French label.
Made from older, lower-yielding vines (over 60 years old), production is limited. As is the case with many wines of this ilk, it will cellar well for at least 10 years.
Ideal with...
Served at room temperature, this wine will benefit from an hour or two in a decanter. Serve with duck, game or lamb shanks, served with a rich sauce. Also a great match for full flavoured hard cheeses such as mature Cheddar, aged Mimolette, Manchego, Pecorino and Parmesan.
