San Marzano Talò Malvasia Nera Salento IGP is a rare opportunity to discover Malvasia Nera di Brindisi as a red wine in its own right. Made entirely from this traditional Puglian grape, it combines ripe red fruit and warming spice with a full body, smooth tannins and a generous, approachable character.

Four to six months in French oak adds polish and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. If Primitivo is normally your first choice from Puglia but you'd like to explore something less familiar while retaining plenty of richness and softness, Talò Malvasia Nera is an excellent place to start.

Merchant's Tip

If Primitivo is normally your first choice from Puglia, Talò Malvasia Nera is a very easy way to explore something different. It retains the generous fruit, body and smooth texture that make richer southern Italian reds so appealing, while introducing a traditional Puglian grape that is much less commonly encountered on its own.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby red.

Nose: Intense and complex, with ripe red fruit accompanied by warming spice.

Palate: Full-bodied and generous, with ripe fruit, spice and smooth, well-integrated tannins. Substantial in the mouth but pleasantly soft and polished.

Finish: Persistent and smooth, with ripe fruit and spice lingering through the finish.

Is San Marzano Talò Malvasia Nera Right for You?

Choose Talò Malvasia Nera if you enjoy generous southern Italian reds but would like to explore beyond familiar grapes such as Primitivo and Negroamaro.

It's particularly interesting if you want to discover Malvasia Nera di Brindisi in its own right. The grape is traditionally encountered alongside other Puglian varieties, whereas Talò is made entirely from Malvasia Nera.

If you prefer light-bodied reds, very high acidity or particularly firm tannins, another style may suit you better. Talò is firmly on the full-bodied, ripe and smooth side of the spectrum.

Why It Tastes This Way

Talò is made entirely from Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, a traditional Salento variety historically more often encountered alongside Negroamaro. Here San Marzano gives the grape the opportunity to stand alone.

The vineyards are around San Marzano in Salento, approximately 100 metres above sea level, where the climate combines high average temperatures with relatively low rainfall. The vines grow in shallow, clay-rich soils with a significant rocky component.

The grapes are harvested during the second half of September. Temperature-controlled maceration and alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts last approximately ten days before the wine spends four to six months in French-oak barriques.

The result is a full-bodied but approachable expression of Malvasia Nera, combining ripe red fruit and spice with smooth tannins and the additional polish provided by its period in oak.

Food Pairing & Serving

Talò Malvasia Nera is particularly well suited to red and roasted meats, especially dishes served with richer sauces, as well as medium-aged cheeses.

Serve at around 16–18°C.

Merchant's Verdict

The real reason to buy Talò Malvasia Nera isn't simply that the grape is unusual. It's that San Marzano has made an unfamiliar variety remarkably easy to enjoy.

If you already like the ripe fruit, generous body and smooth texture of southern Italian reds but feel ready to move beyond another Primitivo, this offers genuine discovery without asking you to abandon the style of wine you already enjoy.
