Bodegas Bhilar Rioja Blanco is an individual, minimally interventionist white Rioja for anyone wanting to explore beyond the region's more conventional styles. Viura with a little Garnacha Blanca delivers vivid citrus and orchard fruit, vibrant acidity and mineral freshness, while gentle skin contact and restrained oak bring intriguing savoury texture and complexity.
The fruit comes from biodynamically farmed vineyards around Elvillar in Rioja Alavesa, where David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman put vineyard character ahead of a prescribed winemaking formula. The result has hints of orange-wine character without becoming extreme: distinctive and thought-provoking, but still fresh, balanced and wonderfully drinkable.
Bodegas Bhilar Rioja Blanco offers a genuinely individual take on white Rioja. Predominantly Viura with a little Garnacha Blanca, it combines vivid citrus and orchard fruit with excellent acidity, mineral freshness and a gently creamy, savoury texture.
What makes it particularly interesting is the way those familiar Rioja grapes are handled. Skin contact, natural fermentation and carefully judged maturation add complexity without overwhelming the fruit, producing a wine that feels unconventional but never difficult to enjoy.
Merchant's Tip
Don't let the mention of skin contact make you expect an extreme orange wine. There's an intriguing savoury, textural quality here, but plenty of freshness and recognisable fruit too. If you enjoy white Rioja but fancy seeing what happens when a small, minimally interventionist producer takes it in a different direction, this is a fascinating bottle to try.
Nose
Fresh and distinctive, with lemon and orange peel, orchard fruit and subtle floral notes accompanied by gentle spice and a touch of creaminess.
Palate
Expressive and textured, combining vibrant citrus fruit with excellent natural acidity and a clear mineral freshness. Subtle creamy and savoury notes add depth without taking attention away from the fruit.
Finish
Long, fresh and mineral, with lingering citrus peel, gentle spice and a finely textured savoury character.
Choose Bhilar Blanco if you're looking for white Rioja with individuality. It has considerably more texture and complexity than a straightforward young Rioja Blanco, but its identity isn't built around the richer, overtly barrel-fermented style you might expect from a more traditional premium white Rioja.
It's particularly interesting for an adventurous wine drinker who enjoys discovering how different producers interpret familiar grapes. There is skin contact and minimal-intervention winemaking here, but neither turns the wine into something deliberately challenging: freshness, fruit and balance remain central.

Bhilar Blanco comes from biodynamically farmed vineyards around Elvillar in Rioja Alavesa. These are relatively young parcels by Bhilar's standards, planted in limestone-influenced soils at elevation, where the relatively cool conditions help the grapes retain the natural acidity that gives the finished wine so much energy.
Viura provides the core of the wine, with Garnacha Blanca adding another dimension to the blend. Rather than making a conventionally crisp young white, Bhilar allows the destemmed grapes a period of fermentation with their skins. That contact helps build texture, savoury complexity and the subtle suggestion of orange-wine character you find in the glass.
Natural fermentation and maturation using concrete and oak develop the wine further without trying to disguise its origins. The precise balance and time spent in different vessels can vary between vintages; the enduring aim is to retain freshness while adding texture and complexity. That combination explains why Bhilar Blanco can feel unusual and familiar at the same time.
The combination of acidity, texture and savoury complexity makes Bhilar Blanco particularly useful with food. Try it with grilled or baked fish, shellfish, roast chicken, grilled vegetables and Mediterranean dishes. It also has enough texture for richer seafood and gently creamy sauces.
Serve at around 10–12°C rather than fridge-cold. A larger white-wine glass and a little time after pouring will allow its citrus, floral, creamy and savoury characters to become much more expressive.

Bhilar Blanco earns its place in our Rioja range because it doesn't duplicate either our fresh young whites or our richer barrel-fermented examples. It takes familiar Rioja varieties and shows what they can become through biodynamic farming, skin contact and a more minimally interventionist approach to winemaking.
Most importantly, those techniques haven't become the point of the wine. It remains fresh, balanced and enjoyable, while giving the curious Rioja drinker something genuinely different to investigate. Alongside Bhilar's Graciano, it makes a very convincing case for this small producer's place in our range.
If Bhilar's individual approach has caught your interest, our Bodegas Bhilar producer guide explores David Sampedro and Melanie Hickman's biodynamic, minimally interventionist philosophy in more detail.
To see the same spirit of exploration applied to red Rioja, Lágrimas de Bhilar Graciano puts one of Rioja's traditional supporting varieties firmly centre stage. Or browse our Bodegas Bhilar collection to compare both wines.
