Little James' Basket Press Sauvignon Viognier is an unusual French white that makes clever use of two very different grapes. Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus freshness and lively acidity, while Viognier adds peach, apricot, floral aromas and a little extra weight, creating a wine that's both refreshing and generously flavoured.
Made by Château de Saint Cosme and fermented without oak, it is an approachable but genuinely distinctive alternative to a straightforward Sauvignon Blanc. Expect grapefruit and fresh citrus alongside ripe stone and tropical fruit, with enough texture to make it versatile at the table while retaining a crisp, refreshing finish.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Aromatic and inviting with grapefruit, peach and apricot alongside floral notes and touches of lychee and tropical fruit.
Palate: Fresh citrus and grapefruit from the Sauvignon Blanc are balanced by the softer, fleshier character of Viognier, bringing ripe peach, apricot and tropical fruit. Bright acidity keeps the wine lively while the Viognier gives the mid-palate an attractive rounded texture.
Finish: Fresh and aromatic with lingering citrus, stone fruit and a gentle floral character.
About
Little James' Basket Press is made by Château de Saint Cosme, the historic Barruol family estate best known for its wines from Gigondas in the Southern Rhône. Louis Barruol combines Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier for this white, deliberately bringing together two grape varieties more commonly associated with very different French wine regions.
The appeal lies in what each grape contributes. Sauvignon Blanc provides freshness, acidity and citrus character, while Viognier brings flesh, perfume and ripe stone fruit. Together they produce a white that offers more aromatic richness and texture than a typical Sauvignon Blanc while remaining crisp and refreshing.
Winemaking: The 2022 is a blend of 50% Viognier and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is fermented and matured in stainless steel rather than oak, preserving its fresh fruit, aromatic character and lively acidity.
Vineyards: The two varieties are selected to complement one another: Viognier grown on limestone contributes richness and aromatic character, while Sauvignon Blanc from cooler sites provides the freshness and acidity needed to balance the blend.
Food Pairing: Excellent with grilled fish, seafood, ceviche and fresh salads. Its combination of citrus freshness and slightly fuller stone-fruit character also makes it a good partner for Mediterranean vegetables, lightly spiced dishes and soft goat's cheese.
