Petit Guiraud Sauternes 2016 offers the richness of Sauternes in a fresher, particularly elegant style. Made from 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, it combines grapefruit, passion fruit and pineapple with floral notes and beautifully balancing acidity, giving sweetness without an overly heavy feel.
Produced by Château Guiraud from its certified organic Sauternes vineyards, the grapes are selectively hand-picked after developing noble rot. Fermentation in both stainless steel and barrel followed by 12 months' ageing adds complexity while preserving the wine's vibrant fruit. An excellent introduction to fine Sauternes, with enough freshness to make it remarkably versatile with food.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Fresh and expressive with grapefruit, passion fruit and pineapple, complemented by delicate floral aromas and the complex richness associated with noble rot.
Palate: Sweet and generous but notably fresh, combining ripe tropical fruit and citrus with a smooth, gently rounded texture. The unusually high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc brings freshness and lift, balancing the richer character of the Sémillon.
Finish: Elegant and persistent, with lingering tropical fruit, citrus freshness and a delicate floral character.
About
Petit Guiraud is the second wine of Château Guiraud, the historic Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Sauternes. It is deliberately made as a lighter and more immediately approachable expression of the estate, retaining the character of botrytised Sauternes while emphasising freshness, elegance and fruit.
The 2016 is a blend of 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. That relatively high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc is an important part of the wine's character, bringing citrus and tropical fruit freshness to complement the richness and texture of Sémillon.
Winemaking: The botrytised grapes were harvested entirely by hand through successive selective pickings. Fermentation took place partly in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and partly in barrels, with no chaptalisation, cryoextraction or other enrichment techniques. The wine was matured in vats and barrels for 12 months.
Vineyards: Château Guiraud has been certified organic since 2011. Its vineyards are predominantly sandy gravel with some clay gravel, over complex subsoils incorporating sand, gravel, clay and limestone. Careful plot selection helps give Petit Guiraud its particularly fresh expression of the estate's Sauternes terroir.
Food Pairing: Excellent with soft or blue cheeses, foie gras and lighter fruit-based desserts. Its combination of sweetness and freshness also works particularly well with roasted poultry, cured ham or other dishes where a contrast between savoury and sweet flavours is welcome.
