If you enjoy rich, approachable Italian reds but would like to discover something a little different, Boccantino Apulia Primitivo Susumaniello Salento IGT is an excellent choice. It combines the generosity that has made Primitivo one of Italy's favourite red grapes with the freshness and subtle spice of Susumaniello, creating a wine that's both familiar and refreshingly different.
It's an easy-drinking, versatile bottle that offers plenty of ripe fruit without becoming heavy, making it equally enjoyable with food or on its own. For many customers, it's one of the most enjoyable introductions to another of Puglia's outstanding native grape varieties.
Our Recommendation
If you've enjoyed Primitivo before but have never tried Susumaniello, this is one of the bottles we'd recommend first. The blend retains the ripe fruit and smooth texture that make Primitivo so approachable, while Susumaniello brings a fresher, livelier dimension. The result feels reassuringly familiar while introducing you to one of Puglia's less familiar native grapes.
Nose: Generous aromas of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum are complemented by sweet spice, delicate vanilla and subtle savoury notes.
Palate: Warm, smooth and generous, with ripe dark fruit supported by soft tannins and gentle spice. There is plenty of richness, but enough freshness to keep the wine lively and balanced.
Finish: Supple and fruit-driven, with lingering dark fruit and gentle spice.
The combination of Primitivo and Susumaniello is central to this wine's character. In this blend, Primitivo provides much of the ripe fruit and generous texture, while Susumaniello helps give the wine the freshness and liveliness that distinguishes it from a straightforward Primitivo.
The grapes are harvested by hand during the second half of September and fermented at a controlled temperature between 16–18°C. Part of the wine then matures in stainless-steel tanks while another part spends time in large oak barrels, allowing gentle oak influence without disguising the fruit. After blending, the wine receives a further three months of ageing in bottle.
The result is a warm, generous Puglian red with plenty of ripe fruit and spice, but with enough freshness to prevent the wine becoming overly heavy.
The wine's generous fruit, gentle spice and smooth texture make it an excellent partner for tomato-based pasta, grilled meats, beef ragù, roast lamb, barbecue dishes, sausages, pizza and mature cheeses.
