Rall Red Blend is a distinctive South African red from Swartland, created by Donovan Rall, one of the leading figures in the country's modern generation of independent winemakers.
After studying viticulture and winemaking at Stellenbosch University and gaining experience overseas, Donovan returned to South Africa and established Rall Wines in 2008. His approach centres on carefully selected vineyard parcels, traditional grape varieties and winemaking techniques that preserve the character of the fruit and its origins.
Rall Red is a Syrah-dominated blend supported by Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. Inspired by the traditional red blends of France's Rhône Valley, it brings together the depth and savoury complexity of Syrah with the fragrance, freshness and complementary structure of the other varieties.
Unlike heavily oaked or particularly ripe expressions of South African red wine, Rall Red emphasises aromatic complexity, natural freshness and carefully managed tannins. Its combination of dark fruit, wild herbs, pepper and earthy character makes it particularly appealing to customers who enjoy serious, savoury reds with individuality and ageing potential.
With several years of bottle age behind it, this wine is now entering an especially appealing stage of its development, offering the opportunity to enjoy its generous fruit and emerging savoury complexity while retaining the structure for further cellaring.
Winemaking: The blend comprises 70% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 10% Carignan and 8% Cinsault. The grapes undergo natural fermentation using whole bunches, helping develop aromatic complexity, savoury character and firm, finely textured tannins. The wine is matured for ten months in seasoned French oak barrels, allowing its fruit and vineyard character to remain prominent. It is bottled without fining and with only very light filtration, followed by approximately eighteen months of bottle maturation before release.
Vineyards: The grapes come from carefully selected vineyards in Swartland, South Africa, predominantly planted on granitic soils. These sites provide the concentration, aromatic expression and natural freshness that characterise the wine. Different vineyard parcels and grape varieties contribute complementary layers of fruit, spice and structure to the finished blend.
Food Pairing
An excellent partner for roast lamb, venison, grilled beef and slow-cooked meat dishes, particularly those featuring rosemary, thyme or other aromatic herbs. Its savoury spice and firm tannins also complement chargrilled vegetables, mushroom dishes, Moroccan-inspired lamb and mature hard cheeses. Allowing the wine some time in a decanter can help reveal its aromatic complexity, particularly when young.
