It is also deliberately different from conventional Rioja. Don't think of this simply as the bottle above Luis Cañas Reserva. It offers something different. If the Reserva appeals because of its beautifully balanced maturity, stay there with confidence. Choose Selección de la Familia when the occasion calls for a more distinctive, concentrated and individual wine — and give it plenty of time in the glass.
Nose
Intense and complex, with ripe black and red berry fruit, fine oak and spice followed by balsamic and gently smoky notes. With air, richer fruit, cinnamon and subtle liqueur-like characters begin to emerge.
Palate
Full, concentrated and fleshy, with ripe dark fruit, fresh acidity and prominent but beautifully balanced tannins. Spice, fine oak and savoury complexity develop around the fruit as the wine opens.
Finish
Long and persistent, with ripe dark fruit, spice and fine oak continuing through a powerful but polished finish.
Choose this if you already enjoy Rioja but want something more individual than simply moving further along the familiar ageing ladder. Its old-vine concentration, unusual Cabernet Sauvignon component and ambitious maturation produce a more powerful and distinctive expression of Luis Cañas.
If what you really want is a mature, refined example of classic Rioja Reserva, Luis Cañas Rioja Reserva is likely to answer that question more directly. If you'd prefer a softer, more immediately approachable Rioja for everyday drinking, Luis Cañas Rioja Crianza is the natural starting point.
Selección de la Familia earns its place when neither of those quite describes what you want — when you're looking for a special bottle whose distinction comes from the wine itself rather than simply from spending longer in the cellar.
The difference begins in the vineyard. Fruit destined for Selección de la Familia comes from selected old plots with favourable orientation and exposure, poor soils and naturally restricted yields. Those conditions give fewer grapes with the concentration and structure required for a wine of this scale.
Tempranillo provides the Rioja foundation, but the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon is significant. It contributes structure and a different dimension of dark-fruited character, helping explain why this wine feels distinct from the producer's more traditional Tempranillo-led Rioja rather than merely more concentrated.
After fermentation, the wine undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation before twenty months' maturation in French and American oak. The important result isn't simply more oak: exceptional fruit, Cabernet Sauvignon, rigorous selection and extended maturation work together to create the wine's concentration, structure and slowly developing complexity.
This is a wine for substantial food. Roast lamb, beef, venison and other game are natural partners, while mushroom or truffle dishes work particularly well with its savoury complexity. Mature cheeses, Iberico ham and slow-cooked dishes also have enough flavour to accompany it.
Serve at around 16–18°C in a generous red-wine glass. This is one of those bottles where patience pays: allow it time to open after pouring, particularly while relatively young, and consider decanting when you want to encourage its different aromatic layers to emerge.
