Tasting Notes
A real flavour sensation, Dead Arm benefits from several hours in a decanter after which you will be rewarded with rich black fruits, damsons, stewed plums, liquorice, hints of black pepper and a super-long, concentrated juice finish.
About
Founded in the McLaren Vale in 1912 by the Osborn family, d'Arenberg is today run by fourth generation Chester Osborn. This is an eclectic and eccentric winery making very distinctive red and white wines, with Dead Arm being their flagship wine.
The wine is 100% Shiraz. Small batches of fruit are gently crushed and then crushed again two thirds of the way through fermentation by foot. It is then transferred to a mixture of new and used French oak barrels until the fermentation is complete. The juice is then left on its lees with no fining or filtering. The term Dead Arm comes from a vine disease caused by a fungus that randomly affects vines all over the world with one half, or an 'arm' of the vine slowly becoming dead wood. Whilst the yields from the remainder of the vine are fewer, they show amazing intensity. These factors all contribute towards the finesse and sheer weight of this Shiraz.
Ideal with...
This fine wine is no shrinking violet and will hold its own against just about any dish. Avoid lighter flavours and fish. Apart from that, big cheeses, red meats, dark chocolate and rich tomato sauces will all work.
