Port is the quintessential after dinner drink, often accompanying a selection of fine cheeses. Being higher in alcohol, and with a fuller mouth feel than red wines, it is the ultimate choice for just sipping and relaxing after a good meal.
Port is made only in Portugal's Douro Valley, and must be from grapes exclusively grown here. With an ABV of between 16-20% its the strongest of the fortified wines.
Made like regular wine, its fermentation is stopped by adding aguardente (grape spirit) leaving plenty of residual sugar, resulting in its high alcohol content.
