Primitivo Wine

Primitivo is a red wine from Puglia, a region in Southern Italy, overlooking the Mediteranean sea, where the climate is ideal for producing ripe, juicy, and fruity grapes.

Primitivo wines are big and powerful, with flavours of red and black fruits - raspberry, blackberry, cherry and plum - along with spicy, peppery notes. It is known for its high alcohol content and is generally full bodied. This Puglia red is a delightful wine when young, but has truly exceptional aging potential.

Why Choose Primitivo

Primitivo is one of Italy's most captivating red wines, with this bold grape variety yielding almost 20 million bottles per year in the Primitivo di Manduria DOC region alone. Its smooth flavours of blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice have earned it a well deserved recognition amongst wine drinkers.

What we love about Primitivo is that it has a unique character amongst Puglia's wine styles with it’s full-body and punch-packing 16% alcohol content, seen especially in those from the Manduria region. That, along with the wine offering such fantastic value compared to some of the alternate big named Italian varieties.

Tasting Notes: What to Expect from Primitivo

Colour: A glass of Primitivo holds a symphony of flavours that dance on your palate. The wine's full body shows through its intense, dark ruby red colour - a hint of its rich character.

Primary fruit flavours: Your first sip brings a burst of jammy dark fruits. Blackberry and plum lead the profile, while black cherry and raspberry notes add depth. Puglia's warm climate gives these fruit flavours an unmistakably ripe, almost candied quality. The wine stands out with its unique 'fruit punch' character that reminds you of crushed fruit ready for jam-making.

Spice and secondary characteristics: Primitivo goes beyond just fruit notes to reveal fascinating secondary flavours. Baking spices like cinnamon and black pepper weave throughout. Aged versions develop subtle earthiness with hints of tobacco and leather. The wine's soft, velvety tannins make it very approachable.

Finish: The alcohol content ranges from 13-16% ABV balanced by moderate acidity that complements its richness. This combination creates a warm finish that stays pleasantly on your palate.

How Oak Ageing Affects Primitivo

Oak ageing adds another layer to Primitivo's flavour profile. American oak barrels bring vanilla and coconut notes, while European oak adds subtle hints of clove and coffee. The oak chip size used during ageing shapes the final taste significantly - larger chips boost 4-vinylguaiacol levels and make the wine's aroma more complex.

Ageing Primitivo wine will develop softer tannins, reduce astringency and develop more mellow fruit flavours along with some leather and tobacco notes. The wine will develop more weight, and the overall taste will increase in both depth and complexity.

Primitivo has more ageing potential than almost any other wine type.

Primitivo Q&A’s

Does Primitivo make a good wine choice for people new to red wine drinking?

New wine enthusiasts will find Primitivo a perfect starting point into Italian wines. The wine's smooth texture and soft tannins make it easy to enjoy. On top of that, its fruit-forward profile lets you enjoy it right away. Many bottles also have a unique dried fruit-leather character that adds depth without being overwhelming for newcomers to this wine type.

Is Primitivo good value compared to the more famous Italian reds?

Most Italian wines come with hefty price tags, with decent bottles of Amarone and Barolo entering the market at £25. Primitivo on the other hand has entry-level bottles at around £10, while premium picks rarely go much above £25. These prices make Primitivo available to more people than many other famous Italian varieties.

This wine adapts well to different occasions, whether you drink it young or aged. Entry-level bottles pair perfectly with casual meals, while premium Manduria selections shine at special events. Such flexibility, along with reliable quality across price points, makes Primitivo one of Italy's best value wines.

Is Primitivo the same as Zinfandel?

At the end of the 1990’s the DNA of the Primitivo and Zinfandel grapes were examined and were found to be the same grape. An uncomfortable finding both for the Californian and for the Italian wine makers.

However, the time they have spent apart, the different climate, and the very different soil makeup, results in these wines having very different taste profiles. The different wine making techniques further leads to differences. They do both share a very fruity palate, and great aging potential.
