About

Rioja is both the name of the wine and the region it comes from. The wine is classified into four categories, Rioja, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. The first is aged for up to a year and is the fruitiest of Riojas. The second, Crianza, is aged for at least two years of which one year must be in barrel, Reserva is aged for at least three years of which one year must be in barrel. And the Gran Reserva must be aged for at least five years of which two years must be in barrel. Both Reserva and Gran Reserva Riojas are not necessarily produced each year. With many wineries, it depends upon the quality of the vintage, hence La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva is only available from the top vintages.

La Rioja Alta is aged for 6 years in barrel before being bottled. It is then aged for a few more years at the winery before being released for sale. It is a sleeping giant, a wine that needs age to bring out its best and in terms of quality, can be compared to first growth Bordeaux or Super-Tuscan wines from Italy..

Our Views

We haven't been lucky enough to try this highly regarded Gran Reserva Rioja. Wines bottled in larger formats such as this tend to be the best juice and, because of their size, age better than normal 75cl bottles. Given its condition, the vintage, bottle size, etc, it comes highly recommended.
