Tremendous. Intoxicating nose of black fruits and peppery Spanish charcuterie (Serrano ham/Pata Negra). Rich, dark fruits and licorice on the palate with super soft, well integrated tannins offering complexity with no edges whatsoever. A delicate aura of fresh spearmint, which, although present, doesn't dominate the superb palate. Finishes with aged, balsamic, pencil lead notes. Smooth, intense, complex - a fine wine.
About
For a winery that has only been in the current owners' care for 25 years, it's a testament to the expertise of the winemaker that they have produced a wine so fine and with so much character. Perhaps Spain's most well-know grape variety, Tempranillo is also the grape used for Rioja. Because La Mancha, where this wine comes from, does not have the same legal classification as Rioja, it cannot be described as a Reserva or Gran Reserva, yet it delivers on all fronts at least as much as a top Rioja. Merlot is the softest variety in the blend and is most famously known as the variety for Pomerol, perhaps the greatest wine of Bordeaux. Cabernet Franc is another variety typically used in Bordeaux blends.
From 45 year old vines, Buho Negro is a blend of 38% Tempranillo, 31% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested at night (when they are at their firmest) by hand in late August and early September and are then taken off the stems and meticulously sorted. Each variety is made separately before blending and being aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. This is a well-structured, complex wine combining the best of Spain with France and which will comfortably cellar for 10 years or more.
