Tasting Notes
Domaine de Chazalis Merlot 'Cuvee Richard' drinks like an expensive Bordeaux (Pomerol). No surprise then to learn that the wine-maker sources one year old oak barrels (French) from a Chateau in Bordeaux (which is a well-kept secret) and ages his Merlot in these for around 18 months. The result is a wine with great balance of dark fruits and tannins.
About
Named after the current Richard's grandfather, 'Cuvee Richard' has become something of an iconic wine in the area with most of the restaurants within about a 20 kilometre radius of the winery stocking it.
Successive vintages just seem to get better and better too. This is not just because of good wine-making skills, but because the vines are ageing with slightly lower, higher quality yields each year. Whilst the very best is kept for the 'Cuvee Passion', production of this is limited, leaving better and better juice for the Cuvee Richard.
Ideal with...
Unusually for a French red (though as with many good New World red wines), it drinks well on its own, though does go exceptionally well with red meats and game. A favourite too with the Sunday roast.
