About
The Beringer winery was founded in 1876 by German born brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer and was one of the first wineries in the Napa Valley. Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2001, Beringer became the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa. Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of vineyards assembled to make the best possible Napa Valley Cabernet from each vintage. Whilst this choice of vineyards gives the winemaker more flexibility, it has also made the Private Reserve something of a moving target.
1981 was only the second vintage of Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon created by Ed Sbragia, the Napa Valley's Master of Cabernet Sauvignon. Last tasted in November 2013 and rated 94 points, it is still, in Ed's words, 'One of the biggest, baddest wines we ever put in the bottle'. With numerous other superb reviews, this is undoubtedly one of our finest wines. We contacted Beringer direct to gen up and they were equally impressed.
Our Views
To our knowledge, this is the last bottle of any size available in the world. Equivalent to 12 bottles, the price is very low for a wine of this age, pedigree and rarity, working out at around half what the bottle price would be, were it still available. Being, such a large format, the wine will have also aged much more slowly than a standard size bottle, making it suitable for drinking or further cellaring. Or, of course, the ultimate 40th celebration.
