Antonio Navajas 100th Anniversary is a genuinely special Rioja, created as a centenary wine rather than another step through the familiar Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva ladder. Old-vine Rioja Alta Tempranillo and Graciano deliver concentrated dark cherry, plum and cassis, layered with cocoa, vanilla and warm spice.
What makes it particularly interesting is the combination of richness and structure with freshness and polished tannins. Choose it when you want Rioja to feel more ambitious and individual — for an important dinner, gift or simply to explore what Rioja can offer beyond its traditional ageing categories.
Appearance: Deep ruby red, retaining impressive colour and intensity despite its extended maturation.
Nose: Generous and complex, with dark cherry, plum and cassis alongside cocoa, vanilla, black pepper and warm toasted spice.
Palate: Rich and concentrated, with ripe black cherry and plum supported by cocoa, sweet spice and well-integrated oak. Substantial but polished tannins provide structure, while underlying freshness prevents the wine from becoming heavy.
Finish: Long and persistent, with dark fruit, cocoa and fine spice carried by polished tannins and lingering freshness.
Choose this wine if you already enjoy Rioja but want to explore something more individual than simply choosing between Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. It has the ripe fruit, oak and structure that make mature Rioja appealing, but greater concentration and a deliberately special-cuvée character.
It should particularly appeal if you enjoy full-bodied, structured reds such as premium Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Cabernet Sauvignon or richer styles of Tempranillo, but still want freshness and polished tannins rather than sheer weight.
It also makes sense when the occasion matters. The centenary story and limited, specially selected nature of the wine give it the presence for an important dinner or wine gift without its appeal depending on rarity alone.
Special Cuvée or Gran Reserva?
They answer slightly different questions. Choose Gran Reserva when what attracts you is the extra maturity, softness and savoury complexity created by extended ageing. Antonio Navajas 100th Anniversary is better understood as a special selection: older vineyard fruit, greater concentration and a deliberately individual blend and maturation were used to create something outside the normal progression. One is principally about what ageing brings to Rioja; the other is about what a producer can create when making a special wine without allowing an ageing category to define it.
Antonio Navajas 100th Anniversary was created to celebrate the centenary of Bodegas Navajas, a family producer based in Navarrete in Rioja Alta. Rather than marking the occasion with another conventional ageing-category wine, the family selected fruit specifically for a more ambitious centenary cuvée.
The wine combines predominantly Tempranillo with a smaller proportion of Graciano from estate vineyards more than 30 years old around Navarrete. Tempranillo provides the concentrated dark fruit and body at the heart of the wine, while Graciano contributes freshness, perfume and additional structure.
The grapes are fully destemmed and undergo cold maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation before the wine spends 24 months in Bordeaux-style barrels combining American oak staves with French oak heads. Further maturation in bottle allows the concentrated fruit, oak and tannins to integrate.
The result explains why this tastes different from simply moving further along Rioja's traditional ageing ladder: vineyard selection and concentration establish the wine's character first, while oak and bottle maturation develop that character rather than defining it.
The wine's concentration and polished structure suit substantial but relatively straightforward dishes that allow its fruit and complexity to remain visible. Try it with grilled or roast beef, lamb, venison, slow-cooked meat or mature hard cheeses. A good steak is particularly appropriate.
Serve at around 16–18°C. Giving the wine time in a large glass or decanter before drinking will help its dark fruit, spice and more mature characters open fully.
