Altos de José Ignacio Reserva Albariño is a distinctive Uruguayan take on Albariño, grown in Maldonado close to the Atlantic coast. Fresh citrus and ripe stone fruit lead the way, with lively acidity and a subtle mineral character giving the wine the freshness and definition that make this grape so appealing.
Fermentation in stainless steel preserves that vibrant fruit, while three to six months on the lees adds texture and extra depth without masking its freshness. It is an excellent choice for Albariño drinkers wanting to explore beyond Spain, combining familiar citrus-driven character with the individuality of Uruguay's emerging Atlantic-influenced vineyards.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Fresh and expressive with citrus fruit, peach and other ripe stone-fruit aromas, accompanied by delicate floral and mineral notes.
Palate: Bright and refreshing, combining lemon and citrus zest with juicy peach and stone fruit. Crisp acidity gives the wine excellent definition, while time on the lees contributes a gently rounded texture and added depth through the mid-palate.
Finish: Fresh, persistent and clean, with lingering citrus, stone fruit and a subtle mineral character.
About
Altos de José Ignacio Reserva Albariño comes from Maldonado in southern Uruguay, an increasingly exciting area for cool, fresh white wines. The vineyards are influenced by their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, with maritime conditions helping Albariño retain the acidity and freshness that are central to the variety's character.
Albariño may be best known for the wines of north-west Spain, but it has proved particularly well suited to Uruguay's Atlantic-influenced vineyards. Altos de José Ignacio provides an interesting opportunity to discover that different expression while retaining the citrus, stone fruit and refreshing acidity that Albariño drinkers will recognise.
Winemaking: Made entirely from Albariño, the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain freshness and varietal character. It then spends three to six months on its lees, adding texture and complexity while preserving its bright fruit and acidity.
Vineyards: The grapes come from Maldonado in southern Uruguay, where the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean provides an important maritime influence. The combination of coastal conditions and cooling breezes helps preserve freshness as the grapes ripen.
Food Pairing: A natural partner for seafood, particularly grilled prawns, shellfish, white fish and ceviche. Its combination of freshness and texture also works well with sushi, fresh salads and lightly spiced Asian dishes.
