Luberri Biga de Luberri Rioja Crianza is a wonderfully expressive Rioja for anyone who enjoys plenty of ripe fruit but still wants the extra depth that oak ageing brings. Juicy cherry and blackberry sit alongside violet, liquorice and gentle spice, with supple tannins and lively freshness making it particularly inviting and easy to enjoy.
Its character comes from combining traditional Rioja Alavesa carbonic maceration with around a year in oak. The result sits beautifully between youthful, fruit-driven Rioja and a more classically matured Crianza – generous and approachable, but with enough savoury complexity and structure to keep every glass interesting.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Generous aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and other dark fruits are joined by violet, liquorice and subtle notes of sweet spice from the oak.
Palate: Juicy and expressive, with ripe red and black fruit at its core. Supple tannins and fresh acidity give the wine an energetic, approachable feel, while gentle oak brings spice, structure and savoury complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Smooth and persistent, with lingering ripe fruit, liquorice and gentle spice balanced by a fresh, savoury edge.
About
Luberri is the family winery of Florentino Martínez Monje in Elciego, Rioja Alavesa. Florentino is particularly associated with the region's traditional carbonic maceration wines and founded Luberri in the early 1990s. The estate combines those deeply rooted local techniques with careful maturation to produce Rioja that places freshness, fruit and drinkability at the centre of its style.
Winemaking: Predominantly Tempranillo with a small proportion of Garnacha, Biga de Luberri begins with traditional carbonic maceration, a technique closely associated with Rioja Alavesa that encourages intensely aromatic, juicy fruit. The wine is subsequently matured for around 12 months in oak, adding spice, structure and complexity while retaining the vibrant fruit that defines the Luberri style.
Vineyards: The grapes come from Luberri's vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, where the combination of altitude, a relatively cool climate and limestone-rich clay soils helps Tempranillo retain freshness and aromatic definition. These conditions contribute to Biga's balance between ripe fruit, lively acidity and fine tannin structure.
Food Pairing
A versatile Rioja for the table, particularly good with roast lamb, grilled pork, charcuterie, tapas and tomato-based dishes. Its combination of juicy fruit and gentle oak also makes it an excellent partner for burgers, sausages and mature cheeses.
