Poggio Anima Asmodeus Nero d'Avola is the sort of red that reminds you why Sicily has become one of Italy's most exciting wine regions. Packed with ripe plum, black cherry and dark berry fruit, it delivers plenty of richness and warmth while retaining the freshness that keeps each glass inviting. Notes of black pepper, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs add character without complicating its easy appeal.
Made from organically farmed Nero d'Avola grown in the heart of Sicily, Asmodeus combines generous fruit with a surprisingly polished structure. A brief period in older oak softens the tannins rather than adding obvious oak flavour, allowing the grape's naturally bold, spicy personality to take centre stage.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Generous aromas of ripe plum, black cherry and dark berries are joined by black pepper, tobacco, liquorice and subtle herbal notes.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with layers of ripe black fruit, candied berry and plum. Fresh acidity balances the wine's richness, while smooth tannins provide structure and shape. Gentle spice and savoury notes develop across the palate.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering dark fruit, liquorice and soft, finely structured tannins.
About
Poggio Anima is a collaboration between respected Brunello producer Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and importer Ronnie Sanders. The project focuses on producing authentic regional wines from carefully selected vineyards across Italy, with each bottling designed to express a specific grape variety and place of origin.
Winemaking: After cooling, the grapes are destemmed and undergo an extended period of skin contact before fermentation in stainless steel. The wine is then matured briefly in used French and American oak barrels, adding texture and structure without masking the fruit character, before returning to tank prior to bottling.
Vineyards: The Nero d'Avola comes from a single organically farmed vineyard in the province of Caltanissetta in central Sicily. Situated at approximately 1,600 feet above sea level, the site combines altitude, sunshine and volcanic sand and clay soils to produce ripe fruit while maintaining freshness and balance.
Food Pairing
Excellent with grilled meats, slow-cooked lamb, pasta with rich tomato sauces, pizza and mature cheeses. Its ripe fruit and gentle spice also make it a natural partner for barbecue dishes.
