Jura Seven Wood is an innovative Highland Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky that showcases the remarkable influence different oak casks can have on flavour.
Initially matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in six carefully selected French oak casks sourced from renowned forests across France, this beautifully balanced whisky develops exceptional depth, complexity and elegance. The result is a rich yet approachable dram packed with tropical fruit, warming spice, dark chocolate and gentle oak, while retaining Jura's signature smooth, lightly maritime character.
Distillery
Located on the remote Isle of Jura, home to a tiny community and famous for its dramatic landscapes and abundant wildlife, Jura Distillery has been crafting distinctive single malt whisky since 1810. The distillery is renowned for producing elegant, approachable whiskies with a subtle coastal influence, making them equally appealing to newcomers and experienced whisky drinkers alike.
Production
Seven Wood begins its maturation in traditional American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into six different types of French oak sourced from celebrated forests including Limousin, Tronçais, Allier, Vosges, Jupilles and Les Bertranges. Each oak variety contributes its own character, adding layers of spice, structure, sweetness and complexity that combine to create a whisky with remarkable balance and depth.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Aromas of caramelised pineapple, dried apricots, honey, vanilla fudge and toasted almonds mingle with hints of espresso, cinnamon and polished oak.
Palate: Smooth and full-bodied with flavours of tropical fruit, salted caramel, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, orange peel and warming baking spices, supported by elegant oak and Jura's gentle maritime freshness.
Finish: Long and satisfying with lingering notes of cocoa, nutmeg, gentle pepper, sweet oak and soft dried fruits.
Merchant's Insight
The Seven Wood isn't simply a marketing exercise—it genuinely demonstrates how different oak species shape a whisky's flavour. Despite the complexity of its maturation, the whisky remains balanced and approachable rather than overly woody. It's an excellent choice for drinkers looking to explore cask influence beyond traditional sherry or bourbon finishes, and offers impressive complexity for its price.
