Georges Vigouroux Pigmentum Malbec is a wonderfully approachable expression of Cahors, the historic French home of Malbec. Bursting with raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, it combines generous, ripe fruit with attractive floral aromas and rounded tannins. Fresh and inviting, it offers the character of French Malbec without the more demanding structure sometimes associated with the region.

Made entirely from Malbec grown on the gravel and clay terraces overlooking the Lot Valley, Pigmentum is carefully fermented to emphasise fruit rather than heavy extraction. The result is a versatile, satisfying red that's equally enjoyable with a simple midweek supper or a leisurely meal with friends. An excellent introduction to the softer, fruitier side of Cahors.

Why It Tastes This Way

Pigmentum is produced by Georges Vigouroux in Cahors, south-west France, a region closely associated with the origins of Malbec. The wine is made entirely from Malbec grapes selected from vineyards on the higher gravel and clay terraces between the sweeping bends of the River Lot.

These well-drained terraces provide a suitable environment for Malbec, encouraging the development of concentrated fruit while retaining the freshness and structure that distinguish wines from Cahors.

The winemaking is deliberately focused on fruit expression. A period of cold maceration before fermentation helps draw out colour and aromatic compounds, followed by traditional fermentation with regular pumping over of the juice. The relatively short fermentation and maceration period, approximately two weeks, is intended to capture generous fruit flavours without excessive tannin extraction.

Rather than emphasising heavy oak influence or powerful structure, Pigmentum showcases the grape's natural raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant character. The result is a rounded, accessible Cahors that retains its French identity while offering immediate drinking pleasure.

Food Pairing & Serving

Pigmentum is particularly versatile at the table. Its generous fruit and rounded tannins complement roast pork, grilled beef, roast lamb and duck, while its freshness works well with tomato-based pasta, cannelloni and hearty casseroles.

For something different, try it with a mildly spiced chicken curry or a Moroccan-style beef tagine. The wine's ripe fruit provides a pleasing contrast to the savoury spices.

Serve at approximately 16–17°C. A slightly cooler serving temperature helps retain its lively fruit character.
