Comboio do Vesúvio offers a wonderfully accessible way to discover one of the Douro's great estates. Bursting with wild berries and ripe red fruit, it layers that generosity with rock rose, aromatic herbs, pepper and spice. Fine tannins and lively acidity keep everything fresh, making this a much more energetic, immediately enjoyable Douro red than its powerful origins might suggest.
Crucially, there is no oak ageing: the focus is firmly on fruit, freshness and the character of Quinta do Vesúvio itself. Named after the railway that runs through this historic estate, it combines genuine Vesúvio pedigree with a relaxed, youthful style made for drinking rather than contemplating.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh and expressive, with ripe red and wild berry fruit accompanied by floral rock rose, Mediterranean herbs and subtle spicy notes.
Palate: Juicy and energetic, with clearly defined wild berry and plum flavours supported by fresh acidity. Herbal notes of fennel and Mediterranean vegetation add complexity, while pepper, clove and fine tannins provide seasoning and structure without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Fresh and nicely persistent, with lingering wild fruit, aromatic herbs and a gently peppery, spicy character.
About
Quinta do Vesúvio is one of the Douro's historic great estates, renowned particularly for its Vintage Port. The property has been owned by the Symington family since 1989, who have continued its traditions while developing an important range of Douro DOC still wines. Comboio do Vesúvio became the estate's third dry red wine and takes its name from the railway that has served the property for generations.
Winemaking: Comboio do Vesúvio is made from traditional Douro varieties including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, with the precise proportions varying by vintage. The wine is deliberately matured without oak contact, with careful control of movement and exposure to air helping preserve its primary aromas, vibrant fruit and youthful freshness.
Vineyards: The fruit comes from Quinta do Vesúvio in the Douro Superior. Its dramatic vineyards rise from close to the Douro River to more than 450 metres, with predominantly north and west-facing slopes and largely schistous soils. This considerable variation in altitude and aspect helps the estate combine the concentration of the warm Douro Superior with valuable freshness and balance.
