Torbreck Old Vines MSG 2022 offers a slightly different take on the classic Barossa Rhône blend. Mourvèdre takes the lead, bringing savoury, earthy character and wild herbs to ripe cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit, while Shiraz adds depth and Grenache provides a final touch of aromatic lift. Soft tannins and refreshing acidity keep all that flavour beautifully balanced.
For anyone who enjoys generous Australian reds but prefers complexity to sheer power, this is a particularly appealing choice. It combines the richness expected from Barossa with garrigue, thyme, spice and an earthy edge, creating a characterful red that's equally comfortable with Sunday lunch or a hearty winter dinner.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Lifted aromas of red cherry, wild blueberry and blackcurrant are joined by savoury notes of damp earth, wild herbs, thyme and star anise.
Palate: Medium-bodied and generous, with ripe red and dark berry fruit supported by soft tannins and a long line of fresh acidity. Mourvèdre contributes earthy, savoury depth, while Shiraz provides richness and Grenache adds a subtle aromatic lift.
Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering dark fruit, dried herbs, gentle spice and an attractive savoury character.
About
Torbreck Vintners was founded in the Barossa Valley in 1994 and has built its reputation around the Rhône grape varieties that have such a long history in the region. The winery is particularly associated with Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre, producing wines that combine the natural richness of Barossa fruit with structure, freshness and distinctly Rhône-inspired character.
Winemaking: The 2022 Old Vines MSG is a blend of 53% Mourvèdre, 43% Shiraz and 4% Grenache. Putting Mourvèdre at the head of the blend gives the wine its distinctive savoury and herbal personality, complemented by the darker fruit and body of Shiraz and the aromatic contribution of Grenache. The resulting wine combines ripe Barossa fruit with soft tannins and freshness rather than relying simply on weight and power.
Vineyards: The fruit is sourced from old vines in the Barossa Valley, a region with an exceptional heritage of established Rhône varieties. The warm, dry conditions encourage full flavour and ripeness, while mature vines provide naturally concentrated fruit that gives the finished wine its depth and character.
Food Pairing
Particularly good with roast lamb, venison, game, slow-cooked beef and richly flavoured casseroles. Its combination of ripe fruit, wild herbs and savoury character also makes it an excellent partner for grilled mushrooms, lentil dishes and mature cheeses.
