Vadio Tinto, Bairrada

Hand-made, 'garagiste' style wines, Vadio is more of a project than a winery due to its size and its owners passion to rediscover indigenous varieties from their native Bairrada.
Aged for two years in a combination of French and American oak barriques, before being aged for a further year in the bottle before release.
With a drinking window up to 2033, this wine was awarded 90 points by Robert Parker Wine Advocate.
A versatile 'all-rounder' red wine which is a good match to most everyday dishes.

Lovely fresh and elegant aromas of berries lead to a delicate palate with elegant fruit flavours and delicate herbs. This is backed up with a soft, fine acidity and polished tannins.

About

Vadio was started in 2005 as a small project by Luís Patrão (who is also the winemaking director at Herdade de Coelheiros). His aim was simple; to show just how good well-made wines from Bairrada could be. With this in mind, the wine is made with Baga, the native grape variety from this region, which lies on the coast of central Portugal.

The proximity of the sea, atlantic climate and the terroir, which is mostly clay/limestone, are all major factors in the wine's personality and flavours (especially the tannins). Plots are generally tiny, although the region boasts some 7,000 hectares of vineyards and can trace wine production back to the 10th century when it won its independence from the Moors.

We love this wine as it is a great 'all-rounder'. Try is with herby sausages, roast chicken with stuffing or a simple carbonara.
