  • On the palate the Isle of Harris Whisky shows cereal, a green start with waves of fruit and spice notes, with a leathery, smoky and liquoricey finish
  • The Hearach Whisky is the first, historic single malt whisky from the Isle of Harris island distillery
  • Something a little unique - every batch of The Hearach is made to the same recipe. However, there will be subtle, natural variations between each which reflect the casks chosen and the length of time they ‘marry’ the vatting

Brief Description

Tasting Notes

There are so many complex layers of flavour, and it will be different for everyone. But, I (quoting the Distillers Blender) get a gentle peat smoke on the first sip which reminds me of island home fires burning when I was growing up. It comes along with a toasted maltiness. I can also taste homemade apple sauce and smell machair flowers, particularly white clover which springs up on our west coast every summer. Mixed spices appear, and an old-fashioned sweetness from things like candied ginger, vanilla, and honeycomb.

Finally, there’s a long, clotted-cream note, mixed with a lasting sense of new leather.

Production: The Hearach is ‘Woven From People And Place’:

  • People - Local distillers, all trained at the distillery having no prior experience in the industry. One of youngest distilling teams in Scotland with average age of 25 years. We use a very hands-on process in our production e.g. first cut is done by nosing rather than on number of minutes., steam valves managed manually. This creates slight variations between batches which adds to the character of the dram. We take our time with a mix of short and longer fermentations.
  • Place - Our water sourced from Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain is the softest of any Scottish distillery. The water flows over Lewisian gneiss, some of the oldest rocks on earth. Its hardness helps ensure the extremely low minerality of our water. Our spirits is made in our bespoke copper stills and matured in our hand-picked oak casks by the shores of the Atlantic, near the west-coast village of Ardhasaig. Our island’s oceanic climate benefits.
