Domaine Michaut Frères Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy shows the richer, more generous side of Chablis while retaining the freshness and mineral character that define the region. White flowers and acacia lead into ripe fruit and a rounded, slightly creamy palate, balanced by fine acidity and a distinctive mineral return.
Made from Chardonnay grown on steep, south-facing Kimmeridgian slopes, part of the wine is fermented and matured in used French oak, adding texture without obvious new-oak flavour. It is an excellent choice for someone wanting greater depth and richness than a classic Chablis while preserving its characteristic freshness and sense of place.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Expressive and elegant with white flowers and acacia alongside ripe orchard fruit and subtle mineral notes.
Palate: Rounded, powerful and generously textured, with ripe fruit and a gently creamy character balanced by fine acidity. Subtle oak adds breadth rather than overt woody flavour, before the characteristic mineral character of Chablis reasserts itself.
Finish: Long and balanced, with lingering ripe fruit, fine acidity and a fresh mineral return.
About
Domaine Michaut Frères is based close to Chablis, farming vineyards on the Kimmeridgian soils that are fundamental to the region's distinctive style. The domaine is HVE certified, with much of the vineyard work carried out by hand and grapes harvested into small containers to protect them on their journey to the winery.
Beauroy is a Chablis Premier Cru that offers greater richness and depth than a straightforward village Chablis while retaining the freshness and mineral character expected from the region. Its combination of ripe fruit, floral character and a broader, gently textured palate makes it particularly appealing to Chardonnay drinkers looking for a more substantial expression of Chablis.
Winemaking: The Chardonnay grapes are gently pressed before fermentation takes place using a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation softens the wine's natural acidity, while a proportion is matured for around 11 months in used French oak, adding texture and complexity without introducing obvious new-oak flavours.
Vineyards: The Beauroy vines occupy steep, south-facing slopes on classic Kimmeridgian soils. This combination of favourable exposure and Chablis' distinctive limestone-rich geology helps produce Chardonnay with both ripe fruit concentration and the fine mineral freshness associated with the appellation.
Food Pairing: Excellent with oysters, shellfish and richer fish dishes, but its extra weight makes it equally comfortable with white meats and creamy sauces. Try it with roast chicken, grilled scallops, salmon, soft cheeses or a classic fish pie.
