Thistledown Gorgeous Old Vine Shiraz takes the generous fruit and spice people love about Australian Shiraz and gives it a fresher, more playful personality. Wild raspberry and ripe strawberry mingle with black pepper, while unexpected notes of peach and nectarine bring aromatic lift. Soft tannins and a silky texture make it wonderfully easy to enjoy.
The secret is a small proportion of the white grape Zibibbo, co-fermented with old-vine Shiraz from a single Riverland vineyard. Wild fermentation and only a short spell in old French oak preserve all that vibrant fruit, creating a lighter-footed, unusually aromatic take on a familiar Australian favourite.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Highly aromatic, with wild raspberry and ripe strawberry joined by peach, nectarine and a gentle lift of peppery spice.
Palate: Soft, juicy and immediately inviting, with macerated strawberry and raspberry fruit at its core. Ripe stone-fruit notes add an unusual aromatic dimension, while silky tannins and cracked black pepper provide just enough structure and seasoning.
Finish: Supple and fresh with lingering red fruit, gentle peppery spice and an attractive aromatic lift.
About
Thistledown Wines was founded by Masters of Wine Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan, with a focus on producing more elegant, energetic and textural expressions of South Australia's great vineyard resources. Their Gorgeous range takes the same thoughtful approach but packages it in wines designed above all to be delicious and approachable.
Winemaking: The 2023 combines 87% Shiraz with 13% Zibibbo, the aromatic white grape also known as Muscat of Alexandria. The varieties are co-fermented using wild yeasts before the wine receives a short period in old French oak. It is bottled young to retain the vibrant aromatics, juicy fruit and silky texture that define the Gorgeous style.
Vineyards: The Shiraz comes from a single old vineyard in South Australia's Riverland, on a property with a history of grape growing stretching back to the region's early soldier settlements. Thistledown sees these established vineyards as an undervalued resource capable of producing characterful fruit when carefully managed and harvested.
Food Pairing
Excellent with roast lamb, grilled beef, barbecued meats and sausages, as well as rich stews and mature hard cheeses. Its juicy fruit and soft tannins also make it enjoyable on its own, and its fresher style means it can work particularly well served slightly cool.
