About
Launched by C.V.N.E. in the 1920s, Viña Real became known for pioneering wines from Rioja Alavesa. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined Viña Real’s ethos ever since.
Over previous years the Gran Reserva was made from grapes from their own vineyards, typically San Ginés and Castejones with grapes also from Laguardia and Elceco. More recently they have also included grapes from their vineyards in Labastida.
Labastida consists of smaller plots, located at an altitude of 500 to 650 m with mainly calcareous and sandy soils.
After picking, the grapes spend 24 hours in cold maceration, after which alcoholic fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28-30ºC.
The wine is aged for 24 months in single-use barrels, it is then clarified and bottled.
From bottling the wine will reach great drinking quality in 3 years, but will peak many years later.
