A delicious and little know dessert wine, almost from a lost era. These Auslese wines cellar really well and are comparable to the best Sauternes. They merit the highest scores, though are rare and don't often appear on the critics' radar.

About

Auslese literally means 'selected', though it is also now the term used for late harvested German dessert wine along with Beerenauslese (selected berries), Trockenbeerenauslese (selected dried berries) and Eiswein (ice-wine). These are all 'Spatlese' or late-harvest wines since the grapes are hand-picked from very ripe selected bunches, usually in late-November/early December. Discovered by winemaker Schloss Johannisberg in 1787, it is unlike Sauternes and other sweet wines since the grapes tend not to have the characteristics of botrytis or 'noble rot'.

This Albiger Petersberg is from Langenlonsheim in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate - about an hour from Frankfurt. Langenlonsheim is well known for its great vineyards and wineries and its Qualitätsweine. Fertile soils and the region's warm climate have been defining factors for the village. Made with the Huxelrebe white grape variety, this wine also enjoys the highest quality classification for German wines; Qualitätswein mit Prädikat.

These wines drink extremely well on their own as aperitifs, though are also superb with food. Our favourite matches are with crème brûlée, bread and butter pudding and fruit filled crepes.

Our Views

Because of the higher sugar content, dessert wines age well and are a safe choice. This is a great price for this 1990 vintage wine which comes Highly Recommended.
