Quinta dos Carvalhais Colheita Branco is a lovely introduction to the distinctive white wines of Portugal's Dão region. Encruzado and Gouveio bring fresh lemon, lime and delicate white fruit, with subtle herbal notes and a beautifully balanced combination of freshness, weight and texture. A restrained touch of French oak adds complexity without obscuring the wine's elegant fruit.
This is a white made for the table rather than simply the aperitif glass. Native yeasts and careful maturation give it extra depth, while the Dão's naturally fresh character keeps everything poised and lively – an excellent choice when you want something more individual than the familiar international white varieties.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh and elegant, with aromas of lemon and lime accompanied by delicate white fruit and subtle green, herbal notes. A restrained hint of oak adds complexity without dominating the fruit.
Palate: Fresh yet satisfyingly rounded, with citrus and white fruit supported by good volume and structure. The oak is discreet and well integrated, adding gentle texture while lively acidity gives the wine balance and definition.
Finish: Long, fresh and harmonious, with lingering citrus, subtle savoury notes and a gently textured character.
About
Quinta dos Carvalhais is one of the important names of Portugal's Dão region and forms part of the Sogrape family. Situated in the heart of the Dão, surrounded by mountains and pine forests, the estate combines regional tradition with modern winemaking. Winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida focuses on producing elegant, delicate wines that express the freshness and distinctive personality of the region.
Winemaking: Encruzado and Gouveio are harvested and vinified separately. After pressing and settling, fermentation takes place principally in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts selected at the estate. A small proportion of the Encruzado is fermented and matured in used French oak barrels, adding texture and complexity while leaving the majority of the wine in stainless steel to retain its freshness and fruit purity.
Vineyards: Quinta dos Carvalhais lies in the Dão, a historic wine region on Portugal's granitic Beirão plateau. Surrounding mountain ranges help protect the vineyards and moderate the climate, while the region's predominantly granite-derived soils and considerable altitude contribute to the natural freshness, finesse and aromatic definition for which Dão whites are known.
Food Pairing
A particularly versatile food wine, excellent with grilled or baked fish, shellfish and richer seafood dishes. Its combination of freshness and texture also works beautifully with roast chicken, pork, creamy dishes and soft or lightly matured cheeses.
