Condition
Excellent with levels at the base of the neck/very top shoulder and good labels. Some labels slightly damaged though all details are clearly legible. No signs of deterioration with the wine still showing a bright ruby colour. All in all a good example of this vintage.
About
Chateau Pape Clement is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux with its roots stretching back to the 14th century. With a chequered history, the winery has gone from being a thriving success to ruin and back to the success it currently enjoys. The vineyards extend to over 32 hectares with around 30 being planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%). The remainder is planted with white varieties.
The wine is aged for at least 14 months in oak barrels and is a typical high quality 'Grand Vin' Bordeaux with great balance of fruit and tannins. With 40 vintages rated by acclaimed wine critic Robert Parker, and having achieved the magical 100 points (for the 2010 vintage), Pape Clement sits amongst the worlds' greatest wines. As a vintage, 1979 Graves was rated highest of the Bordeaux appelations scoring 88 points out of a possible 100.
Our Views
Given its condition, 1979 Pape Clement shows all the signs of being an elegant vintage wine and would make a very special anniversary or birthday gift. Magnums also cellar better than nomal 75cl bottles.
